In 2009 a project began four stories underneath the skin of New York.

For 100 years, a massive subway station sat unfinished, unused, undiscovered.

Over the course the last year, artists have been secretly escorted into that station to leave their creative mark.

Unobstructed by the pressures of commercial sales, email, or daily routines, each artist painted for one full night.

The original entrance has since been removed and darkness has reclaimed the station. It has become an elusive pirate treasure of contemporary art.

::On October 31st 2010, a street art project of massive proportions opened for one night, for a very exclusive few. It became known to the world as The Underbelly Project. 100 plus artists, some known world wide, and others emerging, came together to leave their marks in the catacombs of New York City.

Some of the artists taking part in the project include Know Hope, Swoon, Faile, Gaia, WK Interact, Jeff Soto, The London Police, Spazmat, TrustoCorp, JMR, Ron English and Flying Fortress.

projectCAPTURED thinks the curators of The Underbelly Project, whoever they are, are absolutely genius. They've successfully brought together a comprehensive collection of contemporary art, allowing the artists to create their pieces without distraction in a secret, subterranean gallery. All of that art, assimilated in one space... pure joy.

There have been rumors and reports of trespassers and haters making their way to the underground site, and dissing the pieces. To those who attempt to destroy or deface The Underbelly Project, we say, FUCK YOU! Don't hate, because you have little to no talent. Appreciate what the curators and artists set out to create:: one space; to create, collaborate and express themselves outside of commercial influence.

News of the project hit the internet HEAVY, with pieces popping up in the New York Times, Juxtapose, Vandalog, Gothamist and the ltv squad's sites. Challenge yourself, We are...

Spring has sprung and things are happening. People are becoming more active in the community. New art is popping up everywhere. With every corner you turn, there is something intereting to see.

Team projectCAPTURED's eyes have opened and We've realized without our own participation, our CHALLENGES won't take off. So we're challenging ourselves. Everyday, a member of the projectCAPTURED team will capture something interesting and post it to our Twitter page. It's our way of encouraging everybody to get involved. From street art to architecture, everything is fair game.

We really enjoy the fall, and have been wandering through the streets of New York. It's amazing to watch the city transform into holiday mode. Snowflakes are going up on the streets and stores are setting up their Christmas decorations.

We're contemplating designing a CHALLENGE for the holiday season. Stay close.

It's been a while since we've been able to hit up our blog, and we apologize.

The projectCAPTURED team has been behind closed doors discussing upcoming CHALLENGES, partnerships and the overall direction we want to take projectCAPTURED.

We've identified key projects we want to contribute to, partnerships that we want to develop and interesting ventures we'd like to take on. Things are going to get REALLY exciting around here.

The projectCAPTURED team had the pleasure of attending Gawker Artists' MOM & POPism exhibition. Our good friend Billi Kid re-interpreted James and Karla Murray's book, Store Front - The Disappearing Face of New York, and brought together 25+ very talented street artists (including great friend and Abztract co-founder Shai Dahan) to create the phenomenal pieces you see here. The prints of the store fronts and every artist's creation blew our minds.

projectCAPTURED is organizing a CHALLENGE of epic proportions focused on street art. We’ve secured a few extremely talented street artists to partner with us for this event. Now, we’re looking to connect with a few more - top notch street artists interested in exploring the possibility of a collaboration with projectCAPTURED for this CHALLENGE.

Why get involved:
You’ll be participating in the first street art scavenger hunt of this magnitude and you’ll have an opportunity to collaborate with other talented street artists and gain exposure for your work.

Billi’s reinterpreting James and Karla Murray’s latest book, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York; and collab’ing with some extremely talented street artists.

We had a great day today. We're making solid connections with sponsors, getting good feedback from people we admire and making things happen.

projectCAPTURED has been hard at work planning our next CHALLENGE and we’re ready to give you a comp preview. The CHALLENGE is going to revolve around street-art. To prepare, you should open your eyes to art of all mediums. Pay attention to art that evokes thought.

projectCAPTURED has always been fond of the creative and have taken particular interest in public/street art recently. We've noticed talented artists doing some pretty phenomenal things.

We're impressed by artists working in all mediums. Banksy's originality; Billi Kid's paste ups, combo slaps and stencils; Abztract's own Shai Dahan's original art on skate decks (and more); Os Gemeos' new mural on Bowery and Houston, mural work by JMR and Jordan Seiler's work with Public Ad Campaign all grab and hold our attention.

If you're not familiar with the artists we mentioned, check them out, they're all top shelf.

Our interest in street/public art could be fuel for our next CHALLENGE, which is TBA soon.

projectCAPTURED rolled to the Gawker ALT/ART show with good friends Abztract. We jump at every opportunity to rep Abztract, wherever and whenever. We know the ALT/ART show was a big success for Abztract and their featured artists. Big props to Shai Dahan and the Abztract family.

On the way to Gawker's ALT/ART show we stopped off to check out OS GEMEOS latest mural. Vibrant and colorful is the way to go. If you’re near Houston and Bowery we strongly suggest stopping by to check it out.

While moving closer to the Gawker ALT/ART show the projectCAPTURED and Abztract teams ran into the extremely talented street artist, Billi Kid who just installed some pieces in the nabe.

Spread the word about projectCAPTURED to gain more points. B.Young has the final say about your shots qualifying as items on the list.

Use both lists! We combine points from both sections to tally the total for each participant.
The maximum number of points possible is 96.
One shot per item on the list.
When uploading your shots to our Flickr group pool make sure you label each shot as it relates to the item on the list. If the shot is from the /SPRD TH WRD list, start the label with ‘/’. If the shot’s from the +shoot what you see list, start the label with ‘+’.
The participant with the most points wins.

We’re calling this CHALLENGE: /SPRD TH WRD+ shoot what you see. Why? Because we’re spreading the word about projectCAPTURED and shooting what we see. The more people we tell, the more people get involved and the more fun we’ll all have. Plus the rewards will be so much more epic. Results will be posted on the projectCAPTURED website.
